三十.关于《钛帝国简介》的一些勘误（下）

十、钛星人的眼睛“在交替观察远近物体时的聚焦速度比较慢，这导致他们的反应时间也并不太高”…

有一说一，这也算是流传长达十余年之久的上古巨谣了。

I.关于钛星人的“视力问题”，最早的源头应该是出自这本于2006年出版的《Xenology》中的一份关于女性以太的尸检报告。

这份尸检记录的C项解剖报告~~见上图红框~~表明这位以太的视力相当贫弱，需要依靠嗅觉（以及科技手段）予以协调。

视觉器官。以横向排列（以185度外扩），呈“哺乳类”结构，与人眼相似。原始的感光器官表明其灵敏度有限。结论：样本是依靠发达的嗅觉（和科技手段？）来对其贫弱的视觉进行协调。

Occular organs. Lateral arrangement (185° peripheral) and &#39;mammalian' structure analogous with human eye. Primitive photoreceptors suggest limited sensitivity of vision. Conclusion: subject relies upon advanced olfactory senses (and technology?) to reconcile poor eyesight.

但是根据下方的E项解剖报告~~见上图蓝框~~，可见这位以太皮肤光滑，并不经常从事体力劳动。

上肢:有三个负责操控的手指和一个与其它手指相对的大拇指。毫无瑕疵的真皮层表明（样本）并不经常参与体力劳动。

Upper limbs. Three manipulatory digits plus opposable thumbs. Unblemished dermis suggests manual labouratypical.

而且从对方年龄来看~~见上图紫框~~，这位女性以太已经活了61个钛星年，相当于49个泰拉年,以钛族的平均寿命，她早已到了可以进行终末之旅仪式、消失在神庙的深处的年纪了。

PS：虽然少数以太拥有非常漫长的人生，但对于氏族中的绝大多数人而言，他们的自然寿命就像下文中的那位以太一样，和这个种族的平均水平相差无几。

“按照你们人类帝国的年份，我们钛星人只能活四十，或许五十个年头，而我已经经历了四十八个春秋了。想想这个吧。有了这个休战协议，就能救下数以十亿计的生命。在我们的保护下，奥罗瓦吉亚的人民将继续繁荣昌盛。只要同心协力，我们就能将整个星区从灾难中拯救出来。只要合兵，我们的舰队就有机会挡住泰伦虫族。永恒吞噬者是可以被击败的，但不是通过愤怒，而是通过纪律、秩序和逻辑。你们的战士氏族对这些信条视同拱璧，难道不是吗？”

换而言之，这位以太并不是战斗人员，而且从她的年纪来看，她早已进入暮年。那么拿这么一位老得可以进入灵庙的以太的视力分析报告作为样本，然后由点及面将其覆盖到整个钛族、并以此把他们全部判定为是一群看不清快速移动物体的远视眼，这是否可行呢？

当然不行。

钛星人是一个拥有超级进化能力的种族，由于分工不同所导致的生理差异不仅体现在各个氏族之间，同样也体现在氏族之内——就拿以太为例，从生理能力上来看，投身征战之道的以太和他们那些从事文职、手上连老茧都没有的同僚根本就是两个物种。

以铵'史为例，同样是以太，这一位可以在乱军之中取兽酋首级如探囊取物（1）、可以单枪匹马对战黑暗灵族的兽王及其所率兽群丝毫不落下风~~甚至还有将对方尽数反杀的余裕~~（2）、甚至可以在科摩罗的竞技场中成为常胜不败的冠军——就连维克特的心腹手下、~~职权包括且不限于~~掌管黑暗之都所有角斗的典礼大臣都会前来观赏这位以太的“表演”（3），如果说他是一个远视眼&看不清快速移动物体的半瞎，估计没人会信。

（1）在早先的战斗中，火焰战士的夏司'维被一头巨大的兽人老大砍翻后剁掉了脑袋。这名勇士的败亡在钛族战士之间引发了强烈的恐慌，他们的防线似乎即将奔溃了。只见铵史跃到兽人老大跟前，用他的荣誉之刃将其一刀两断，然后将兽人的半具残尸挑在武器之上，直至没柄。在以太英勇的抵抗之下，备受鼓舞的火焰战士们坚定地列阵固守，将兽人们打了回去。兽人们像菲欧'瓦许发起了一波又一波的进攻，每一次都是铵史带领着防御者们投身反击，他和他的战士们并肩奋战，用英勇的表现无声地鼓舞着他们。由于以太很清楚：面对如此之多的兽人，城镇被它们占领只是时间上的问题罢了，因此铵史派了一队身着隐形装甲服的战士陪同一名气氏前往首都报信。

战况正炽，建筑熊熊地燃烧着，火焰映衬着钛族防御者的身形。在铵'史那坚不可曲的意志的团结之下，火焰战士们拼尽了他们的勇气和耐力，殊死地奋战着。每次当钛星人的防线在兽人的突击下出现退却时，铵史就会出现在那里，他的荣誉之刃幻化成一团闪亮的银光，将兽人成打地砍翻。以太如同水银一般地移动着，将致命的攻击尽数闪开，他在空中辗转腾挪，仿佛就像舞动着的死亡芭蕾一般。不管他攻向何方，都会有成群的兽人倒下，以至于很快就没有绿皮胆敢接近铵'史了，它们是如此地惧怕这个怎么都无法杀死的战士。

（2）随着一道无声的命令，那些无皮的猎犬向前冲了过来。铵'史向后一跃，一个筋斗落在了巨大的扫描仪顶部，在那里他不会遭到围攻。怪物们尖叫着向他发起猛攻。他用他的长杖击开了它们袭来的利爪。它们又试图朝他跳去，铵'史在猎犬们几乎抓到他的那一刹那把它们尽数挡下。以太的武器快到肉眼难辨，只见他左移右闪，连消带打。其中一条猎犬张嘴向他扑咬过去，铵史向后一退，挥舞着他的长杖，用一记圆弧斩将它砍得身首异处。残存的三只野兽停止了攻击，开始重新估量它们的目标。他任由它们重新聚成一团，然后向后跳了下去，让扫描仪挡在他和怪物之间。

At some unspoken command, the skinless hounds charged forwards. Aun'Shi flipped himself backwards to land on top of the bulky scanning machine where he couldn’t be surrounded. The monsters yelped and swiped at him. He beat their claws away with his staff. They tried to leap at him. Again he stopped them from so much as touching him. His weapon was a blur, moving left and right, blocking and sweeping. One of them launched towards him, its jaws gaping. Aun'Shi stepped back, swung his staff in a wide arc, and decapitated it. The remaining three beasts paused to re-evaluate their target. He let them regroup and jumped down, putting the scanner between himself and the monsters.

其中一个瓦辛'达吹出了一道刺耳的口哨，鸟群们对此作出了反应。只见它们如同火箭般朝着隧道飞去，意图赶上鸠&#39;闰。铵'史将长杖像标枪一样向它们掷去，然后迈步疾奔。荣誉之刃干净俐落地将其中一只飞鸟击穿，然后落入等候在下方的以太手中。剩下的鸟群盘旋着往后飞去，尖叫着以示抗议。

One of the Var Sin'da made a piercing whistle, and the flock of birds responded. They rocketed towards the tunnel, intent on catching up with Gue&#39;run. Aun&#39;Shi hurled his staff at them like a javelin, then broke into a sprint. The blade pierced one of the birds clean through, and dropped into Aun&#39;Shi&#39;s waiting hand. The rest raced back up to the ceiling, crying in protest.

笑容从瓦辛达们的脸上消失了，他们看上去迷惑不解。站在中间的那个吼出了一道命令，然后其他两个向前冲了过去，鸟群和猎犬们也做出了相同的举动。

The grins had vanished from the faces of the Var Sin'da. Instead they looked perplexed. The one standing in the middle barked out an order, and the other two charged forwards. The hounds and birds did likewise.

“我不会有事的。”铵'史提醒着自己。

"I’ll be fine,&#34; Aun'Shi reminded himself.

They hit him all at once with an avalanche of claws, beaks and blades. Nothing could find purchase. Aun'Shi gripped his staff loosely, tucking it in close to stop a spear, sweeping it high to strike a bird, jabbing it straight forwards to knock a hound away. He was the eye in a storm of violence. Their inability to hit him, let alone hurt him, made the two Var Sin’da boil with anger. They screamed obscenities at him. The birds wailed. The hounds roared.

铵'史一言不发，面无表情。即使一把多刺的利刃划最终过他的身侧在他的胳膊上挖出了一处深深的伤口，他依旧镇定自若、全神贯注。他们太多了，以太意识到。他目前没有对其造成有效杀伤，而仅仅只是在抵挡敌人。他试图退进隧道里。在更狭窄的迎敌面中，以太想到，他可以把对方全部干掉，而非仅仅只是在空旷处拖延。

Aun'Shi said nothing. His face was impassive. Even when a serrated blade at last slipped past him and gouged a deep hole in his arm, he stayed silent and focused. There were too many, he realised. He was only holding them off, instead of inflicting casualties. He tried to back up into the tunnel. In the closer confines, he thought, he might be able to focus on killing his foes, rather than simply stalling them.

（3）“女主人！”斯科尔班大声叫嚷着。

‘Mistress!’ Skelban yelled.

瑟琳妮以闪电般的速度向他转过身去。一把匕首出现在她的手中。

Cerraine turned on him with lightning speed. A knife had appeared in her hand. ‘I said hold the curtain!’

“我说了先别开幕！”

‘I said hold the curtain!’

“但是，女、女、女主人，”斯科尔班看上去非常痛苦，“希迪克在宅子里。"

‘But, M-M-Mistress,’ Skelban looked pained, ‘Cidik is in the house.’

Her face became frozen. ‘Master of the Revels, Cidik?’

Cerraine hushed him with a wave of her manicured hand. As important as it was to keep her customers happy, it was doubly so for Cidik. As a minister of Vect, the ruler of all Commorragh, it was his job to superintend each and every gladiatorial game and bloodletting performance. If it were found lacking, say, by starting late, he could close her down with a word.

当然，如果认为铵'史是一个特例的话，那么不妨再来看看同为战斗以太的悠海：两名克鲁特武士在他面前犹如稚童一般弱小（1），面对基因盗取者教会的冠军勇士，他只需一招就可让对方身首异处（2）——如果他像图中的那位UP所说的那样“交替观察远近物体时的聚焦速度比较慢、反应时间也并不太高”的话，肯定做不到这一点。

（1）面对那由不停翻腾着的、五光十色的迷雾所构成的大漩涡，探求者笔挺地站着，他将荣誉之刃举至与目齐平的高度，水平地伸在前方。尽管混杂着无数色彩的雾气不断地向他袭来，但是荣誉之刃上那了无生气的金属部分依旧铮亮明晰，因此以太把目光置于其上，用它所映出的真像将周遭的万千虚影尽数滤除。他凝声运气，吐纳归息，每一次呼吸都有几分钟那么绵长，其间更是将心跳降至了十一下。他的师傅在阿哈特'卡拉仪式中可以将每次呼吸之间的心跳降至七下，但是铵'伊尔'悠海知道他的心境永远无法达到这般静谧的地步。他始终无法超越现有的境界，因此在以太氏族中得不到进一步的擢升。然而对此了然于胸的以太并没有感到丝毫的愤懑或是悲伤，因为除了侍奉上上善道之外，他已将其它所有的欲望统统弃之脑后。

The Seeker faced the maelstrom of swirling, prismatic mist with his back straight and his staff extended horizontally before him at eye level. Its lifeless metal was untarnished by the farrago of colours assaulting him so he kept his gaze locked upon it, using its truth to filter out the lies. He had diffused his breathing to a low susurration, each exhalation extending across several minutes, yet encompassing no more than eleven heartbeats. His master had attained seven beats in the ritual of the arhat’karra, but Aun’el Kyuhai knew he would never match such serenity. Nor would he ever ascend beyond his current station in the Ethereal caste’s hierarchy. That knowledge brought neither resentment nor sadness, for he had cast aside all desire save service to the Tau’va .

除了在身周肆虐的风暴之外，一切皆为妄影。

All else was as illusory as the storm that raged around him.

And behind illusions prowled beasts…

他们同时从迷雾之中跃身而出，一起朝他扑了过去，一人在后，一人靠左，他们认为这两处乃以太的破绽之所在。通常他们的族人在进攻时会发出一连串粗厉的尖啸或是刺耳的枭鸣，然而这一对却是悄然无声地杀了过来，没有给他们的猎物以丝毫的警示。

They came for him together, springing from the mist in perfect synchronicity, one from behind, the other from his left, which they had identified as his weaker side. Traditionally their kind attacked in a cacophony of squawks and hoots, yet this pair came in silence, denying their prey any warning.

They are learning,……

悠海对此表示赞许。他转身向左，将荣誉之刃猛地刺向从侧翼袭来的黑影，但那黑影像一个瘦高丑陋的杂技演员一样仰身后跳，跃进了雾气之中。另一个来袭者的利刃猛劈而下直取以太，虽然悠海片刻之前便已预先闪开，但是他的背上依然感受到了一股凌厉的刀风。这一击是如此的凶猛，令攻击者足足耽搁了一秒钟之久，这导致她在悠海旋转长杖越肩回马一击时根本来不及招架。尽管打出这一击时以太头都没回，但他已从移动的气息中辨析出他所需知的一切。当他踏入阿哈特'卡拉之境后，敌人的轻举就如同剧动一般易察，低语就仿佛呐喊一样刺耳。

Kyuhai approved. He spun to his left, thrusting his staff towards the dark shape flanking him, but it sprang away into the fog like a gangling acrobat. He felt a rush of air at his back as the other assailant’s blade hacked through the space he had occupied a moment earlier. The ferocity of the swing committed the attacker for a second too long, chaining it to the impotent arc as Kyuhai whirled his staff over his shoulder. It was a blind strike, but the displaced air had told him all he needed to know. When he entered the arhat’karra, every moment stretched into many and every whisper shouted.

“Ka’vash！”

‘Ka’vash!’

在荣誉之刃从对手的咽喉上擦过的那一刻，以太如此说道。只需将长杖上的利刃再往前伸出寸许，这一击便可了结对方的性命。他的对手还没来得及按照仪式回礼，第二头凶兽从雾气中扑了出来，他头顶上的棘刺因愤怒而竖得笔直。一对晶亮如珠、深深陷入的小眼睛正怒视着他，在它们下方是一张颌部突出的、边缘如同锯齿般锋利的喙嘴。这个生物穿着一件皮质无袖短衫、除此之外近乎赤身裸体。他健硕的躯体上到处都是部落图腾的纹身以及各种穿刺装饰。这一次，他攻过来的时候可没那么安静了。

he pronounced as his staff brushed his opponent’s throat. Had the weapon’s blades been extended it would have been a killing blow. Before his foe could offer the ritual response, the second beast lunged from the fog, its cranial quills erect with rage. Beady, deep-set eyes glared at him from either side of a prognathous, serrated beak. The creature was naked save for a leather tabard and its sinewy form was riddled with tribal tattoos and piercings. This time it didn’t attack in silence.

鲁克一心求败。

Rukh expects defeat.

当他抡圆了他的长杖接下禽首武士的弯刀时，悠海如此认为。每当泽尔朱克倒下之后，鲁克总会跟着败落。

Kyuhai recognised as he swept his staff around to meet the avian warrior’s scimitar. When Zeljukh falls, Rukh always falls with her.

那个生物如同狂风怒岚一般袭来，其攻势之威猛足以击垮较为逊色的对手。但是他所有的攻击全都被悠海用长杖好整以暇地挡了下来。尽管对探求者而言，应对敌方的猛攻就好像一个成人逗弄一个被激怒的稚童一样容易，但是他依旧任其攻击。或许这样能让对手学到些什么。

The creature struck in a whirlwind frenzy that would have overwhelmed a lesser foe, yet none of its blows passed the gliding, almost languid parries of Kyuhai’s staff. To the Seeker the onslaught was akin to an infant’s tantrum, but he allowed it to run its course. Perhaps it would be instructive.

鲁克他又被愤怒冲昏了头脑。

Once again anger blinds Rukh.

悠海在挡下攻击后作出了以上判断。他有些失望，但并不觉得奇怪，因这一幕他们已经上演过很多次了。

Kyuhai gauged as he blocked. He was disappointed, but unsurprised, for they had played out this scene many times before.

最终，泽尔朱克叫停了这场无望的对决，她发出了一阵由尖啸和喀哒声组成的、充满嘲讽意味的斥责，让她的结发配偶就范。随着一声沮丧的粗鸣，鲁克将他的弯刀丢到一旁，引项认输。

It was Zeljukh who ended the hopeless duel, bringing her bonded mate to heel with a derisory tirade of hoots and clicks. With a squawk of frustration, Rukh threw his scimitar aside and proffered his neck.

PS:泽尔朱克和鲁克可以在很短的时间内，以戏耍的心态，用猎刀将整整一屋顶荷枪实弹的基贼教禁卫宰杀殆尽。

The Ethereal turned to Voyle, as if to speak. Instead he moved, whipping a metal tube from his belt and whirling it towards the dazed man. It elongated from both ends as it swept through the air, its telescoped segments snapping free with a staccato burst of clicks. In the heartbeat it took to complete its arc it had become a staff. It struck Voyle’s helmet and threw him off balance. As he fell against the vehicle he saw the Seeker twirl the weapon back then thrust it forward – into the visor of the giant that had climbed up behind Voyle while the Voice held sway. The blunt tip shattered the mutant’s cyclopean lens and drove through to whatever lay below.

‘Mont'ka!’ the Seeker shouted and the behemoth shuddered as the staff’s blades sprang free inside its skull. Kyuhai twisted the weapon then wrenched it free, tearing away the creature’s visor, along with most of its face. As the giant toppled backwards Voyle glimpsed a protean morass of tendrils and broken bones inside its helm. Kyuhai leapt back into cover as the watchmen answered their champion’s death with a salvo of bullets.

“你的行为让你身陷险境，鸠&#39;维萨&#39;钨。”以太对沃耶说道。

‘Your actions have invited great danger, gue&#39;vesa&#39;ui,’ he said to Voyle.

“是的，探求者，”沃耶低头回答道，“我—”

‘Yes, Seeker,’ Voyle answered, lowering his head. ‘I–’

“等会再说吧，”悠海挥了挥他的荣誉之刃，于是它缩成了一节短棍，“我们得走了。”

‘Later.’ Kyuhai whirled his staff and it contracted back into a tube. ‘We must go.’

而至于其他的以太，从他们决斗时能以不到一微秒的差分将荣誉之刃从距对方一毫米之内的地方砍过，相信他们也不会是远视眼&看不清快速移动物体的半瞎。

钛族的以太将荣誉之刃当成职位的象征和仪式性武器，并（在紧急情况下）作为自卫之用。尽管每一柄武器都是独一无二的特制品，但它们都具有相同的特征：在一根轻量的金属杆上装着一口宽阔的利刃。以太使用这种刃具主要是为了解决争端，他们会进行一场漫长的、高度仪式化的对决，这种对决与其说是战斗不如更像是一种协调一致的共同冥想。参战者仿佛就像是在出神的状态下翩翩起舞，他们的武器会以毫厘之差不到一~~毫米的距离~~从另一人的身上划过，只要有片刻~~一微秒~~的差池就会重创对手。然而不知怎的，这场舞蹈总是不会见血，仿佛以太彼此之间完全融为了一体。事实上，参战者正在进行一场程度极深的精神对决，其境界无法为氏族之外人所窥知。有些以太会带着荣誉之刃奔赴战场，虽然不指望会用得上，但（他们）依然做好了在面对野蛮的敌人时放手一搏的准备。

Tau Ethereals utilise Honour Blades as symbols of office, ceremonial weapons, and (in an emergency) in self defence. While each weapon is custom-made and individual, they all feature a broad blade fitted to a long, lightweight metallic staff. Ethereals use the blades primarily to settle disputes, engaging in lengthy, highly stylised duels that are more coordinated co-meditation than combat. The combatants dance and weave as if in a trance, their weapons flashing past one another scant millimetres and microseconds from causing terrible damage. Yet somehow, the dance is always bloodless, as if the Ethereals are in total union with one another. In truth, the combatants are engaged in a deeply spiritual duel, conducted at a level which none outside of their caste can discern. Some Ethereals carry their Honour Blades on the field of battle, not expecting to have to use them, but prepared to make a last stand against their barbaric foes nonetheless.

所以这位在睡梦中被毒死的女性以太的尸检报告并不能成为作钛星人在交替观察远近物体时的聚焦速度比较慢，这导致他们的反应时间也并不太高的证据。

那么既然以太被排除了“在交替观察远近物体时的聚焦速度比较慢，这导致他们的反应时间也并不太高”的嫌疑，那么钛族陆军的主力——火氏的情况又是如何呢？

A.军官

事实上，从火氏军官在作战中表现来看，他们的裸眼视力和反应能力都很优秀。

以远见司令为例，他仅凭一把脉冲手枪和一柄匕首就可以在汹涌杀至的绿皮之潮中和兽人进行搏杀，如果他像图中的那位UP所说的那样“在交替观察远近物体时的聚焦速度比较慢，这导致他们的反应时间也并不太高”，那他根本就不可能在格斗中单手放翻绿皮武士并重创兽人的战争酋长。

同样，身着XV22的影阳也可以在摘掉头盔后和科'萨罗可汗进行一对一的匕首对决，而且丝毫不落下风——换而言之，欧'夏瑟拉肉眼的动态视力足以看清星际战士连长在对决中的一举一动。

当然，有人会认为远见和影阳是特例一般的存在；如果那样的话，那么不妨看一下这位差点就在近战中把屠杀者尤里克（1）给宰掉的无名夏司'伊尔。在战斗服遭到大破后，这位姓名不详的火氏依然和狼主克罗姆.龙睚（2）极其麾下的精锐狼卫（3）展开了战斗，然而由于寡不敌众（4）再加上战斗服的膝盖在之前的战斗中中了一箭（5）~~导致速度和灵活性受到了影响~~（6），因此他最终还是落了个被大卸八块的下场。

（1）Ulrik the Slayer。

屠杀者尤里克Ulrik the Slayer,狼疮祖父Grandfather Lupus ,鲁斯之子的守护者Guardian of the Sons of Russ,太空野狼的至高狼牧师Wolf High Priest of the Space Wolves，鲁斯之盔Wolf Helm of Russ的持有者。

压在尤里克胸口上的重压突然不见了。他身上的那台巨大的战斗服——死亡阴影——出乎意料地消失了。对头盔里闪过的警报，他几乎目不能视耳不能闻。他那处于极速运作状态自动观感正在对他的盔甲和身体进行诊断，其中绝大多数他早已心知肚明了。诊断反馈的信息唯有一件重中之重：那就是他还活着。他的恶狼护符令其免遭压碎之虞，尽管它也撑不了多久了。

The pressure on Ulrik’s chest suddenly eased. The shadow of the gargantuan battlesuit above him – the shadow of death – unexpectedly disappeared. He could barely see or hear past the alarms in his helmet. His auto-senses were in overdrive, diagnosing the damage to his armour, to his body, mostly telling him what he already knew. They told him only one thing that mattered: he was alive. His wolf amulet had protected him from being crushed, though it couldn’t have done so much longer.

（2）Krom Dragongaze。

在所有十二位狼主中，只有一人无视了至高牧师的命令跟着他来到了此处。只有一人如此渴望在在几千次的行动中证明自己。

Of all the twelve Wolf Lords, only one would have disregarded the High Priest’s orders and followed him here. Only one would have been so eager to prove himself – for the thousandth time – in action.

That one had just saved Ulrik the Slayer’s life.

His orders were received and understood by his Wolf Guard, his company’s fiercest warriors.

They leapt from the drop pod a breath behind their lord and fanned out around the enemy, bolt pistols and storm bolters rattling.

Krom smashed the blade into the battlesuit’s right knee joint, where a missile had already struck.

‘Keep your distance,’ their pack leader cautioned them over the vox-net. ‘One of those things can shatter power armour with a blow, but we have the advantages of speed and agility over it. Best to weaken its defences with ranged fire, then move in for the kill.’

顺便一提，这位夏司'伊尔也是用肉眼目视的方式与星际战士进行交战的。

Towering above all else, the tau machine was an irresistible lure to him, particularly as it was already damaged. The battlesuit’s head had been staved in and 【its pilot had thrown open its chest hatch in order to see】.

因此从相关资料来看，火氏军官的眼睛不仅没有“聚焦速度比较慢”问题，相反他们的动态视力非常出色。

B.士兵

普通的火战士的视力和反应能力并不比人类差，有可能甚至还要更好好一些：因为火战士日常训练的内容之一就是要用镜面盾牌抵挡由机蜂射出的低密度激光束，而且还要将其一一折射回不停移动的发射源中~~有条件的话可以用镜子和激光笔试一下~~。

战斗的噪音将他从回想拽回现实之中。怀着好奇之心，以太移步来到了那个大个子鸠'拉所在的竞技场，他正在那里和一对机蜂对决。碟形的机器环绕着人类嗡嗡低鸣，用低密度的激光袭扰着他，而人类则挥舞着绑在他双腕上的镜面盾牌将射来的光束予以挡下。他唯一的还击方式是将激光折射回它们的发射源。只要直接命中发射器一下就可以瘫痪掉那台机蜂，相对的，只要他的躯干被激光打中三回，这场比赛就宣告终结。从它们的攻击强度来看，机蜂的进攻性已被调到了最大一档——就算是对训练有素的火战士而言，这也是一个挑战。虽然相对于他的体型而言，这大个子的动作很快，但很显然他志大才疏。

The sounds of combat drew him from his reflection. While his mind had wandered, his body had followed its own path, carrying him to the arena where the big gue'la was duelling with a pair of drones. The saucer-like machines buzzed around the man, harassing him with low intensity lasers as he whirled about, blocking their beams with the mirror shields strapped to his wrists. His only method of retaliation was to reflect the lasers back at their source, but only a direct hit on an emitter would disable a drone, while three strikes to his torso would end the bout. Judging by their tenacity the machines had been set to maximum aggression – a challenge even for seasoned Fire Warriors. Though the man moved with a speed that belied his bulk, it was apparent that his ambition exceeded his ability.

从文中可以看出，想要准确地将从远处射至眼前的光束挡下并将其反射回安装在不停移动中的机蜂身上的发射源的话，势必需要良好的动态视力和优秀的反应能力，但从久经训练、身经百战的的前人类士官在进行该项训练时的拙劣表现来看，“在交替观察远近物体时的聚焦速度比较慢，这导致他们的反应时间也并不太高”的嫌疑也可以从那些将此作为日常训练的火战士也身上排除掉了。

事实上，在2011年出版的长篇系列小说行商浪人三部曲的最后一部《Savage Scars》中，GW已经借行商浪人Lucian之口表明：

所谓钛星人的视力缺陷只不过是人类帝国战术部门对钛星人不愿近战所作出的众多理论假设之一。

至于为什么会这样，人们提出了许多假设理论，从意味着钛星人对迅速接近和快速移动物体的聚焦速度要比人类慢的生理缺陷，到由其异形哲学理念所产生的、根深蒂固的道德懦弱（1）。然而卢修安有他自己的看法，他知道自己的观点在远征军战术部里不会得到多少赞同，要是他过于声张的话，甚至可能会招来审判官格兰德的怒火（2）。卢修安开始怀疑钛星人将近身战斗视为一种野蛮可耻的屠杀行为。

Many theories as to why this might be had been posited, from a biological deficiency that meant the tau could not focus on close-up and fast- moving objects as quickly as a human, to a fundamental moral weakness born of their alien philosophies. Lucian had his own ideas, which he knew would not find many sympathetic ears amongst the Tacticae and might even bring about the wrath of Inquisitor Grand were he to voice them too openly. Lucian was beginning to suspect that the tau regarded close combat as a brutal and dishonourable slaughter.

实际上，卢修安之所以会产生怀疑，很可能是因为之前他在与卡拉珊人一起向钛星人冲锋时，发现对方不仅没有因己方的快速接近而反应不及，反而可以作出极其迅速的战术切换。若非火氏的战斗条例要求他们在接敌前先打上一发光子手雷，行商浪人阿卡狄乌斯王朝的族长无疑会在冲锋的途中倒在火战士的脉冲卡宾枪下。

The Rakarshans discarded all notion of tactics and subtlety as they closed on the tau. Though expert stealthers and mountain troopers, when it came to the charge the Rakarshans fell back on the atavistic nature of their ancestors. The tau unleashed a desperate fusillade as the Rakarshans closed, felling at least a dozen in the last seconds. The rifleman to Lucian’s left was felled by a gut shot, doubling over as he grasped his stomach to keep his innards from spilling out of the smoking wound. The rifleman to Lucian’s right was shot in the knee, his entire lower leg blown away as he collapsed to the ground. Lucian bellowed along with the Rakarshans as he closed on the tau warrior only twenty metres ahead.

The alien raised his carbine and brought it to bear on Lucian’s head. For one awful second which felt to Lucian like an eternity, he felt the alien’s crosshair settle right between his eyes. Then an alien voice called out an order, and the alien lowered his weapon to the ground. He pumped the action of an underslung launcher, and a projectile spat from a secondary barrel. It slammed into the ground between the aliens and the charging humans, and Lucian’s vision was filled with flickering motes of energy.
