Set in 19th‑century Paris, the musical follows his journey at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth, where he confronts the hardships and limitations imposed on those without sight. Refusing to accept a life of dependence, Louis pursues equality and independence, ultimately creating the six‑dot reading and writing system that bears his name. The musical also dives into many other issues which occurred in the 19th century, including the maltreatment and hardships faced by those who are blind, along with how science used to pursue to eliminate blindness, often through unethical and illegal methods.
