(from La chevelure) 18:48 - IV. (from La voix) Written from 1967-1970 for Mstislav Rostropovich, Tout un monde lointain... (A whole distant world...) is one of Dutilleux few masterworks (not for lack of talent, Dutilleux published few pieces.) Each movement is inspired by poetry from the Symbolist/Decadent French poet Charles Baudelaire. Like many of Dutilleux's works the entire pieces features a dreamlike surrealist atmosphere with masterful, layered orchestral textures. His harmonic language is very French with clear influences from Messiaen, Debussy, Ravel etc. but nevertheless with a unique voice of his own. I chose the Nicolas Altstaedt performance for the better sound quality. I love Rostropovich but the orchestra is much too quiet in that recording for me. I made this video for study reasons so orchestral clarity is my number one priority. I apologise in advance for any bad page turns; this is my first score video. I do not own the rights to the audio or the score. This video is for purely educational purposes to score-read and study the textures.
