Edit: Because people keep asking, no, ancient Mesopotamia, Persia, Egypt, Phoenician and Assyria were not western but I put them there because they existed before there really was a "West" and heavily influenced Ancient Greece and Rome, the first cultures associated with "the West". For example Greek and Latin alphabet were derived from Phoenician, and Zoroastrianism and the Epic of Gilgamesh were known to the ancient Greeks and influenced their thinking and writing.
