波义耳，狂热且资深的炼金术士，在这个领域内甚至是牛顿的导师。但也正是他，推翻炼金术沿袭千年的铁律——四元素说，开创了近代化学。当然，波义耳并不是一个人在战斗，他和许多科学家并肩同行，并最终创立对后世影响颇深的科学组织——皇家学会。
