Monitoring and Metadata - Exploring Approaches to Attaching Metadata to Logs, Metrics and Traces - Ridwan Sharif, Google
As systems become increasingly complex and distributed, monitoring and observability have become essential for ensuring reliable and efficient operations. Metrics, logs, and traces provide valuable insights into system behaviour and performance. However, to fully leverage their potential, it is crucial to attach meaningful metadata or contextual information to these observability artifacts. Metadata provides a way to attach descriptive information about the resources being monitored, enabling a deeper understanding of the observed data. In this tech talk, we will explore different approaches for incorporating metadata into metrics, logs, and traces, and discuss how it enhances observability and enables effective troubleshooting and analysis. We’ll also cover how different monitoring systems (Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Google Cloud Operations) deal with metadata and make it easier to define more ergonomic queries that involve metadata.
