Ivan Ivanovich (Иван Иванович, meaning “John Doe” ) is a dummy figure who was once shelved. Before Yuri Gagarin became the first astronaut to venture into space, Ivan, as Gagarin’s phantom double, secretly completed two spaceflights and returned to Earth. Ivan was, in the truest sense, the “tester” who laid the foundation for humanity’s space endeavors.
On March 9, 1961, Ivan made his first journey into space. His mission was to study biological samples and test air-to-ground voice transmission systems. Ivan’s chest and abdominal cavities were filled with samples including mice, frogs, flies, plant seeds, and human blood to research the effects of radiation and weightlessness on living organisms. To confuse the West, Ivan’s body was also embedded with food recipes records and choir music. Thus, as Ivan flew around the world, he sang and recited those cabbage soup recipes.
This work sends the digital incarnation of Ivan back into orbit via an actual, operational satellite. Liberated from the Cold War context, Ivan no longer serves as an anthropomorphized vessel of national capital, nor does it represent the ideology of “conquering the cosmos.” Instead, he exists as a bundle of data—a piece of space debris drifting past the Kármán line, accompanied by digital frog and recipes sound, once again circling the Earth.
