2001年9月11日上午，美国有4架客机遭到恐怖分子劫持，其中3架在随后撞击了纽约市的世界贸易中心和华盛顿特区的五角大楼(分别是美国航空11号航班、联合航空175号航班、美国航空77号航班)，另一架飞机由于机上乘客的反抗而坠毁在空地上(联合航空93号航班)。
此次袭击共造成了2996人死亡，其中包括341名消防员、57名警察、55名军人和10名急救医生，受害者来自世界各地60个国家，包含了所有六个大洲、全世界所有肤色人种以及联合国安理会的全部五个常任理事国。事件直接导致的伤者人数达到6291名，间接导致的伤者病患多到无法统计，且数字仍在持续上升，其性质恶劣、惨绝人寰，全世界绝大多数国家都对此次袭击发表强烈谴责，包括古巴、伊朗、朝鲜、伊拉克等与美国长期敌对的国家。
9/11事件是美国全球反恐战争的直接导火索。

Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes, or in their offices; secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers; moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.
我们的同胞，今天，我们的生活方式，以及我们的自由都遭到了一系列致命蓄意的恐怖主义袭击。受害者亦或命丧飞机，亦或亡命办公室；他们是秘书、商人、军事人员、联邦工作人员；他们是母亲和父亲，我们的朋友和邻居。一瞬间，上千条生命在这场无耻邪恶的恐怖袭击中消逝。
The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed; our country is strong.
飞机撞击大楼、熊熊烈火燃烧、巨楼轰然倒塌的景象让我们难以置信，让我们心痛欲绝，让我们心中燃起无声的不屈怒火。此次大规模屠杀袭击的目的是为了让我们的国家陷入恐慌混乱，让我们做出让步。但是他们失败了；我们的国家很坚强。
A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.
我们伟大的民族已经行动起来，去捍卫我们的伟大祖国。恐怖袭击可以撼动我们摩天大楼的地基，但是丝毫无法触及美国的根基。此次袭击可以摧毁钢铁，但是无法动摇美国人民的钢铁意志。
America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.
美国成为袭击的目标，因为我们是全世界最明亮的灯塔，照亮着自由和机遇。没有人可以熄灭灯塔的光芒。
Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature. And we responded with the best of America -- with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.

Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C. to help with local rescue efforts.

Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.

The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington, which had to be evacuated today, are reopening for essential personnel tonight, and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business, as well.
我们政府毫不中断地持续运转。华盛顿的联邦机构在今天早些时候进行了紧急疏散，现在所有必要人员皆已返回岗位，并且会在明天恢复政府运转。美国的经济系统依旧坚挺，美国经济也会继续保持对外开放。
The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.
我们正在追查这场滔天罪行的幕后真凶。我已指示情报机构倾尽全力追查凶手，并由执法机关将他们绳之以法。在我们眼中，包庇恐怖分子之人和恐怖分子本身没有区别，一样逆天违众。
I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance.

America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world, and we stand together to win the war against terrorism. Tonight, I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me." This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day. Yet, we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.
