35. The author believes that the new awards are
[A] harmful to the culture of research.
[B] acceptable despite the criticism.
[C] subject to undesirable changes.
[D] unworthy of public attention.
35. 作者认为新的奖项是_______。
ACD三个都是负面,一个偏正面是B。从一二段看看作者的态度,【1段】①The US$3-million Fundamental Physics Prize is indeed an interesting experiment, 是好事,答案可能是B ;
第五段③Second, it is surely a good thing that…
31. The Fundamental Physics Prize is seen as
32. The critics think that the new awards will most benefit
The Fundamental Physics Prize 可能是the new awards,这是抛砖引玉。
33. The discovery of the Higgs boson is a typical case which involves
34. According to Paragraph 4, which of the following is true of the Nobels?
35. The author believes that the new awards are
作者认为新的奖项是_______。
31. The Fundamental Physics Prize is seen as
[A] a symbol of the entrepreneurs’ wealth.
[B] a possible replacement of the Nobel Prizes.
[C] a handsome reward for researchers.
[D] an example of bankers’ investments.
定位在,like the Fundamental Physics Prize,实际是例证题,like the Fundamental Physics Prize 前面一句有“a string of lucrative awards for researchers”。与[C] a handsome reward for researchers.
【1段】①The US$3-million Fundamental Physics Prize is indeed an interesting experiment, as Alexander Polyakov said when he accepted this year’s award in March. ②And it is far from the only one of its type. ③As a News Feature article in Nature discusses, a string of lucrative awards for researchers have joined the Nobel Prizes in recent years. ④Many, like the Fundamental Physics Prize, are funded from the telephone-number-sized bank accounts of Internet entrepreneurs. ⑤These benefactors have succeeded in their chosen fields, they say, and they want to use their wealth to draw attention to those who have succeeded in science。
article [ˈɑ:tɪkl] (报章杂志中的)文章,论文; 条款; 物品; [语] 冠词;
art=skill 表示"技巧,关节,诡计"
art [ɑ:t] 艺术; 艺术作品;
artifact ['ɑ:təˌfækt] 人工制品(art=skill, fact=to do.)
artificial [ˌɑ:tɪˈfɪʃl] adj. 人造肥料; <美>假花;(fic=to do)

fund [fʌnd] v.
Account [ə'kaʊnt] n.账,账目; v.存款,解释; 认为; 把…视作;
take into account:考虑到;体谅
leave sth. out of account:不考虑
Benefactor [ˈbenɪfæktə(r)] n.
draw attention to吸引…
32. The critics think that the new awards will most benefit
[A] the profit-oriented scientists.
[B] the founders of the awards.
[C] the achievement-based system.
[D] peer-review-led research.
benefit ——do good (to);bene善,好+fit=do做→做事后的好处
The Fundamental Physics Prize 可能是the new awards,这是抛砖引玉。
(What' s not to like? Quite a lot.)” ④句指出,(批评者认为)设奖是为了实现自我推销炒作(an exercise in self-promotion for those behind then),也即出于利益驱使,设奖者自然是最大的获益者,[B]正确。
分别对应文中sef- promotion和those behind then。
【2段】①What’s not to like? (反问)②Quite a lot, according to a handful of(少数) scientists quoted in the News Feature. ③You cannot buy class, as the old saying goes, and these upstart entrepreneurs cannot buy their prizes the prestige of the Nobels. ④The new awards are an exercise in self-promotion for those behind them, say scientists. ⑤They could distort the achievement-based system of peer-review-led research. ⑥They could cement the status quo(现状) of peer-reviewed research. ⑦They do not fund peer-reviewed research. ⑧They perpetuate the myth of the lone genius.
upstart [ˈʌpstɑ:t] n.暴发户,新贵; 傲慢自负的人;
start-up [stɑ:t ʌp]崭露头角
prestige [preˈsti:ʒ] n.
prestigious [preˈstɪdʒəs] adj.
distort [dɪˈstɔ:t] vt.
promote [prəˈməʊt] v.
promote[v.
cement [sɪˈment] n.
perpetuate [pəˈpetʃueɪt] vt. 使(尤指不好的情况、制度、信仰等)继续,延长,(per=through;pet=seek)
The goals of the prize-givers seem as scattered as the criticism. ②Some want to shock, others to draw people into science, or to better reward those who have made their careers in research.
scattered [ˈskætəd] adj.分散的; 零散的make a career
make one’s career= make a career功成名就,取得成功
33. The discovery of the Higgs boson is a typical case which involves
[A] the joint effort of modern researchers.
[B] controversies over the recipients’ status.
[C] the demonstration of research findings.
[D] legitimate concerns over the new prizes.
But the Nobel Foundation’s limit of three recipients per prize, each of whom must still be living, has long been outgrown by the collaborative nature of modern research—as will be demonstrated by the inevitable row over who is ignored when it comes to acknowledging the discovery of the Higgs boson.
【命题解密】[A ]是对第四段③句的合理推断, the joint effort of modern researchers是对文the collaborative nature of modern research的同义替换。
从原文来看,即例子前半句的内容“But the Nobel Foundation’s limit of three recipients per prize, each of whom must still be living, has long been outgrown by the collaborative nature of modern research”,就是说,但诺贝尔奖也存在很大局限性,比如一个奖项最多只能有三位获得者,而且必须健在。
所以选项A“现代研究的共同努力”中的joint(共同的)正是原文中collaborative(合作)的同义替换,所以A为正确答案。
【4段】①As Nature has pointed out before, there are some legitimate concerns about how science prizes—both new and old—are distributed(一分为二看问题). ②The Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, launched this year, takes an unrepresentative view of what the life sciences include. ③But(表示递进) the Nobel Foundation’s limit of three recipients per prize, each of whom must still be living, has long been outgrown by the collaborative nature of modern research—as will be demonstrated by the inevitable row over who is ignored when it comes to acknowledging the discovery of the Higgs boson. ④The Nobels were, of course, themselves set up by a very rich individual who had decided what he wanted to do with his own money. ⑤Time, rather than intention, has given them legitimacy.

legitimacy [lɪ'dʒɪtɪməsɪ] n.
34. According to Paragraph 4, which of the following is true of the Nobels?
[A] History has never cast doubt on them.
[B] They are the most representative honor.
[C] Their legitimacy has long been in dispute.
[D] Their endurance has done justice to them.
cast doubt on使人对…产生怀疑;
do justice to有合理性。
endurance [ɪnˈdjʊərəns] n.忍耐(力);
endure [ɪnˈdjʊə(r)]v 持久,耐久(en=into;dure_进入持久→耐久)
during [djuˈreɪʃn] 在…期间,持续时间(dur =last;)
【精准定位】第四段④句指出,诺贝尔奖和新奖项一样,当年也是有钱的私人设立,⑤句随后表明;诺奖现在在人们心目中的正统地位及其合理性是经过实践的洗礼而成,与设立者的初衷无关。即,正是“奖项延续至今”这一事实赋予了诺奖今天的尊贵品质,因此[D]正确。注: endurance意为“(时间上的)持久性,耐久力”;
选项endurance has done justice
to them分别对应文中Time和has given them legitimacy。
35. The author believes that the new awards are
[A] harmful to the culture of research.
[B] acceptable despite the criticism.
[C] subject to undesirable changes.
[D] unworthy of public attention.
subject to使服从
35. 作者认为新的奖项是_______。
【精准定位】①As much as some scientists may complain about the new awards;尽管有批评,③Second, it is surely a good thing还是可接受的;[ B ]正确。
【5段】①As much as some scientists may complain about the new awards, two things seem clear. ②First, most researchers would accept such a prize if they were offered one. ③Second, it is surely a good thing that the money and attention come to science rather than go elsewhere. ④It is fair to criticize and question the mechanism—that is the culture of research, after all—but it is the prize-givers’ money to do with as they please. ⑤It is wise to take such gifts with gratitude and grace.
As much as=although
