Dead players (not Demons) keep their abilities. Each Townsfolk loses their ability at the start of night 1, then regains it on death.
Townsfolk who die become powerful ghosts who commune with the living to solve their own murder. The evil team may keep dangerous Townsfolk alive to deny them info, and good characters will be angling to get killed at a critical moment.
At the beginning of the first night phase, all Townsfolk lose their abilities, and do not wake to make choices or learn information.
Townsfolk setup effects still happen, as they occurred before the game began.
When players die for any reason, they lose their ability only if they were a Demon: continue to wake Outsiders & Minions like living players.
When a Townsfolk dies, they immediately regain their ability, and will have it for the rest of the game, acting at their designated spot in the night order if applicable.
Townsfolk who act on a certain trigger (e.g. "When you die at night") act immediately if they died the correct way.
"You start knowing" Townsfolk act after the Demon on the first night that they are dead.
Engineer
When should the Engineer wake up?
In the standard night order, the Engineer acts before the Minions & Demons. However, for the Engineer specifically, I recommend waking them as soon as possible after their death. For example…
If the Engineer dies by execution, wake them before the Minions & Demons as usual that night.
If the Engineer ability enters play at night, you may choose to wake them the same night, and if they create new Minions, wake the Minion players again to make new choices.
If the Engineer chooses not to use their ability on the same night that they died, wake them at the normal point in the night order in all future nights.
Hatter
Should I use the Hatter's optional rule?
No!
I strongly encourage the use of “standard” Hatter when playing this script: i.e. Demons must choose Demon characters and Minions must choose Minion characters. A Demon who is desperate to escape from a tight spot can always choose to become an Imp when the Hatter dies. The “chaos” Hatter can be unfair to the good team if it means the evil team can move around and unlock poison at the same time.
Scarlet Woman
Does a dead Scarlet Woman block an Imp from star-passing?
No! But, rules as written, it probably should: an Imp who kills itself must pass to a Minion, and since the dead Scarlet Woman still has its ability it has to be the Scarlet Woman the Imp passes to... so the Imp just creates a dead Demon and the game ends.
However... I would argue that on this script, best practice is to turn the dead Scarlet Woman into an Imp from the Scarlet Woman's ability, but also to turn a second Minion into a living Imp at the same time, so that both characters' ability texts are satisfied in a way that the game may still continue. You would never do this on Trouble Brewing for obvious reasons (and I know that it specifically goes against the Scarlet Woman's entry in the TB almanac), but given this particular Djinn rule I strongly believe it will lead to a more fun game.
Boffin
Do Demons get to use the Boffin ability while they’re alive?
Yes! And if you’re playing online, it might be a good idea to remind the Demon of the Djinn’s special rule before they go telling people that they’re the High Priestess and were told to speak to them. The Boffin lets a Demon secretly gather information while they’re alive, or might give them a fun effect on death: Plague Doctor, Hatter and Farmer are all great Boffin abilities for a Demon who might die at night. The Boffin ability can also (and probably should) change when a new Demon is created.
Do Demons get to use the Boffin ability while they’re dead?
Maybe! Exactly 1 Demon may have a Boffin ability at a time. The dead Demon may keep their ability or the living Demon may gain a new one. Here's how I'd rule it...
As per the almanac, if the Boffin ability is an effect that only persists while the user is dead, the first Demon must keep its Boffin ability and the new Demon may not gain a new one. (Relevant abilities: Banshee, Sweetheart.)
If the Boffin ability is an effect that is triggered on death but has an effect that does not require the character to remain in play, that ability triggers, and then the new Demon may gain a new ability. (Relevant abilities: Farmer, Plague Doctor, Hatter.)
For all other Boffin abilities, I would argue that you should do whatever you think will make the game more fun.
If you think the newly-executed Ojo will struggle to keep up their Dreamer bluff, you can leave the Dreamer ability with the dead Ojo and accept that this means the Scarlet Woman-turned-Ojo gets nothing. If you think it's better for the evil team that the new Demon gets a new Boffin ability, you can do that instead. It's up to you.
We get to make six changes between World Cup matches. Here's what's changed compared to version 2:
Nightwatchman → Washerwoman
Shugenja → Balloonist
Klutz → Sweetheart
Witch → Scarlet Woman
Yaggababble → Ojo
Fang Gu removed
The Washerwoman is an upgrade I've been toying with since v1 first went out, I just had six things I wanted to change first. The evil team is a lot more balanced now and should spark a lot more joy: Scarlet Woman + Boffin is a combination that will make a lot of weird and wonderful on-death abilities available to all three Demons, and executed players dreamt as Demons can no longer be confirmed as good - maybe they just passed on!
I'm knocked out of the World Cup, and may make whatever changes I like at any time! Here's what I would have submitted for the quarter-finals.
Oracle → General
Kazali → Lord of Typhon
+Judge (accidentally omitted on v5.2.0)
The absolute star of this script is Lord of Typhon. It works so brilliantly with the rule, and I'm absolutely gutted I didn't get to pin down a Typhon version before getting KOed. It gives good players something to think about before they start gathering their info, it incentivises evil players to kill their own Minions, it works so well with the Djinn rule and I'm really excited to share it.
Lord of Typhon has an interesting tension with the Cult Leader, as they can add up to two extra evils... but only temporarily. Because Typhon is all in a line, the Cult Leader should always have a good neighbour and the Storyteller can always swing them back... unless the Banshee is keeping the game alive.
A small health warning, then: Banshee, Cult Leader and Lord of Typhon do not belong together in a 7-player game, because you can get to a point where the evil team have 4 votes, the good team have 4 votes too, and there's nothing the Storyteller can do about it. I have also created an alternative version with an additional house rule that smooths over this interaction and lets you flip the Cult Leader good again in a Banshee game - please see version 5.1.0!
Hatter: Should I use the optional rule?
No: If the evil team want to use the Hatter ability to relocate the Demon, they can turn into an Imp or Scarlet Woman and transfer it that way.
Scarlet Woman: Does a dead Scarlet Woman block an Imp from star-passing?
No: The Imp almanac says that the Imp's ability turns an alive Minion into an Imp. Although the Scarlet Woman is obligated to receive a star-pass as she still has her ability per the Djinn rule, the Imp is also obligated to turn an alive Minion, so both effects must happen.
Boffin: Does the Demon get to wield a Townsfolk ability while alive?
Yes: The Demon isn't a Townsfolk, so they may get information from their ability in the early game.
Boffin: Does the original Demon get to keep wielding their good character's ability while dead?
Sometimes: The Boffin must grant only one Demon one ability at a time, but on this script I would like to leave it up to the Storyteller as to which Demon that is. If you want to keep the Cult Leader ability on the now-dead Imp when they star-pass so that they can try for a Cult win, you absolutely can. If you want to give the new Imp a new ability, the original Imp must lose their Boffin ability. As per the Boffin almanac, the Sweetheart and Banshee abilities are "sticky" and prevent future Demons from gaining new Boffin abilities from the same Boffin.
