Wherever American literature is concerned, William Faulkner is generally regarded as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. He is the founder of American "southern literature" and one of the most influential modern novelists in the whole west. His representative works are the sound and the fury, light in August,Absalom,Absalom and so on. Faulkner grew up in the south of the United States. He successfully proposes two modern literary techniques: stream of consciousness and multiple perspectives.
He often talked about history and race. He tries to explain the present by looking back, especially by telling the story of generations of a family. He was very interested in the relationship between blacks and whites in the south. The sound and the fury is a famous novel by Faulkner. It has four parts. It tells a story of deterioration from the past to the present. The past is idealized to form a striking contrast with the loveless present. Go Down, Moses tells roughly the same story of moral injustice which, in Faulkner's opinion, poisoned southern civilization at the root.
Faulkner's attitude toward the "aristocratic" families of the south he describes is ambiguous. In addition to condemning their injustice toward African Americans, there are signs of sympathy or compassion. One of his famous short stories, "A Rose for Emily," is A good example of the complex emotions his work reveals. Faulkner is a difficult writer. Like all modern writers, he was demanding of his readers' cooperative response. There are a lot of inner monologues in his novels, and modern stream of consciousness is frequently and skillfully used. Words usually run together, no capitalization, no proper punctuation. Faulkner had a vivid imagination. His works take root in the deep south and create his own literary environment, trying to transcend the limitation of particularity and achieve universality through this environment. His novels with the most basic human nature and the basic mode of human behavior as the theme are one of the most enduring works in the history of world literature.
