The 14-year-old girl Mouchette lives in the countryside of France, her childhood is bleak and filled with hardship. Her father is a greedy drunkard who sells bootleg liquor and neglects household chores; her mother is bedridden and awaiting death; her infant brother cries incessantly, causing irritability. Family hardships have made this little girl mature too early; the money she earns from working is taken by her father, and she is often beaten. She is mocked and bullied by classmates at school, and the stubborn Mouchette can only vent her dissatisfaction by throwing clumps of earth at her classmates after school. A season that should be full of joy has thus withered prematurely... This film won the OCIC Award at the 1967 Cannes Film Festival, the Best Film Award from the French Film Critics Association in 1968, the Silver Rabbit Award for Best Foreign Language Film Director from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists in 1969, and the Pasinetti Best Film Award at the 1967 Venice Film Festival.
