This film tells the tragic love story of a young couple amidst the smoke-filled wartime era. Veronica (played by Tatyana Samojlova) and Boris (played by Aleksey Batalov) were blissfully in love, but with the outbreak of war, their happiness was shattered. Boris enlisted in the army, and Veronica's parents died in an enemy air raid, leaving her grief-stricken and forced to live with Boris's father. Boris's cousin took advantage of the situation and possessed her, leading to Veronica being condemned by everyone. Under this double blow, Veronica contemplated suicide but clung to the hope of Boris's return. When she learned of Boris's death, she was utterly devastated. After the war ended, as everyone celebrated victory, Veronica arrived at the square holding flowers. A flock of geese flew overhead, reminiscent of the beautiful past.
Upon its release, this film shocked the global cinema world, winning the Palme d'Or and the Best Cinematography Award at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival for its stunning light and shadow contrasts and exceptional camera work.
